Beard & Stache Fest 2012
It takes a unique and creative mind to pair facial hair and fundraising – but now in its fourth year, Seattle’s annual Beard & Stache Fest has turned into a highly anticipated city-wide celebration.
Created and hosted by the talented staff at The World Is Fun, 100% of the proceeds raised during the month-long event go directly to Treehouse programs.
So how exactly does a fisherman’s beard translate into support for kids in foster care? Fuzzy-faced participants are put into teams of five, with a photo of each individual member placed on the outside of an empty paint can (aka a donation bucket). Each team is sponsored by local venues across the Sound (think Kings Hardware, Pies n Pints, the Walrus and the Carpenter, and the People’s Pub to name a few), where the buckets are prominently displayed during the month of March. The three individuals and overall teams who inspire the most quarters – or dollars – in the can win prizes.
The Beard & Stache Fest is expecting 125 contestants this year, including prior contender Mayor McGinn. The Freemont Troll was set to compete with a 10-foot-long mustache, but unfortunately had to stay clean-shaven through renovation – we’ll look forward to seeing him next year.

For more information, follow Beard & Stache Fest on Facebook and Twitter for updates on events taking place at participating venues throughout the festival, including the Opening Reception at Blue C. Sushi in Freemont on Saturday, 2/25. While you’re there, don’t forget to vote for your favorite facial hair creation by tossing a donation in the bucket! A special thanks to the World is Fun, and all of the participants and venues who make the Beard & Stache Fest possible every year!
Foster Care Fact
-
Washington State pays a maximum of $300 per year for clothing. That’s less than half of what an average family of moderate means spends each year to clothe a child.
