Treehouse at the White House

Treehouse was named an Angel in Adoption in a special event at The White House on Monday, September 15.

The Angel in Adoption Award is presented by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) and allows members of the U.S. Congress to recognize community organizations that work to enrich the lives of foster children across the United States and overseas.

Treehouse was nominated for this honor by Congressman Jim McDermott.

"Congressman McDermott is very passionate about helping kids-this organization and this event are very close to his heart," said Mike Decesare, spokesperson for McDermott's office. "He is thrilled about the upcoming award ceremony to honor Treehouse. This will be a day to enjoy-when there's an opportunity to recognize those who are making a difference in the lives of our foster children."

Treehouse has seen demand for its services intensify during the recent economic downturn, including:

  • Sharply increased use of Little Wishes, which provides funds to make sure kids don't miss out on extra-curricular activities
  • A 20% jump in visits this year to the Wearhouse, a free store where foster kids shop for fashionable clothes and shoes, along with school supplies, books, toys, bikes, and other essentials

"Treehouse was founded, first and foremost, to make a difference in the lives of foster children who, through no fault of their own, face tremendous barriers to success in school and in life," said Janis Avery, Treehouse Executive Director. "We are thrilled to be recognized by Congressman McDermott's office and the Angel in Adoption program because it will hopefully shine a spotlight on the crisis that every foster child faces every day."

Foster Care Fact

  • In a Washington state study, only 59% of youth in foster care enrolled in 11th grade completed high school by the end of 12th grade.
